How To Make CBD Butter
There are a few ways to make CBD butter, depending on if you use CBD hemp flower or CBD hemp oil as your base. Using CBD oil is faster as the CBD has already been extracted and made safe for consumption. Using hemp flower can take longer, but it is still not too difficult.

- Unsalted butter (2:1 butter to water ratio)
- Baking pan (if using flower)
- Skillet or steel pot
Recipe & Process
1) If you are using CBD oil, skip to step 3. If you are using CBD hemp flower, the first step is to make it easy for consumption since the flower is typically smoked. Grind the flower to increase surface area for maximum CBD extraction.
2) Preheat the oven to 220-240°F. CBD will begin to evaporate at temperatures higher than 320 degrees Fahrenheit, so be careful. Place the ground-up flower onto a baking sheet and put it in the oven for 30 – 45 minutes. This process is called “decarboxylation,” which removes an acid group from the flower and activates the beneficial compounds.
3) Start melting butter on low heat (around 170 degrees Fahrenheit) in a large skillet or pan on a stove. Some people even use a slow cooker. Once the butter is melted, add in the ground flower or CBD oil. Low heat also prevents the butter from having a bitter or burnt taste, so keep the stove on this temperature the entire time.
4) Let the mixture simmer for 3-4 hours for ground flower, or roughly 5-10 minutes if using CBD oil. Keep stirring every 30 minutes for ground flower. When using CBD oil, stir every few minutes. Remember to keep on low heat, so the CBD does not burn.
5) You can add water throughout the process to help regulate the temperature of the CBD butter mixture during simmering. This will help keep the butter from burning. Don’t worry about adding too much water (within reason, you don’t want to overflow the pan) because it will separate from the butter during the cooling process and can be drained easily.
6) After simmering is done, remove the pan from the heat and let the mixture cool to room temperature. For the ground flower, put cheesecloth over a container/bowl and begin straining the CBD mixture after it cools. A funnel can be useful for containers that have smaller openings. Squeeze out all the leftover oils in the cheesecloth to not waste any butter or CBD.
For the CBD oil mix, after it cools to room temperature simply return it to whichever container you choose and place it in the fridge. You do not need to strain this mix, unless there is leftover water.
7) Refrigerate your CBD butter for it to solidify. This can take several hours.
You can use half CBD butter and half regular butter in your recipes for the best taste and results. CBD butter can have a slightly earthy taste that may affect the flavor of your dish. By using with regular butter, it can also prolong the life of your CBD butter batch!
IMPORTANT: Keep track of how much CBD you are adding to the butter. Effects may be too strong or too weak if you aren’t tracking the amount of CBD that is used. Start with a lower amount if you aren’t sure and gradually add more CBD as desired.
